The Importance of Preventing Legionella in the Workplace
The Legionella Bacterium
Legionellosis, that is caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophilia and other Legionella species, is a serious form of pneumonia. These bacteria which are found in cold water storage tanks, calorifiers and other bodies of water thrive in warm damp places. The bacterium Legionella pneumophilia was first identified in 1977. It has since been associated with outbreaks linked to poorly maintained artificial water systems, particularly cooling towers or evaporative condensers associated with air conditioning and industrial cooling, hot and cold systems in public and private buildings, and whirlpool spas.
